The Pittsburgh Pirates have been spending money this offseason, and the team may not be done.

Entering the offseason, there were talks of the Pirates willing to spend money, which many scoffed at. However, Pittsburgh has done just that as the team traded for second baseman Brandon Lowe and signed first baseman Ryan O’Hearn (two years, $29 million). Pittsburgh also signed reliever Gregory Soto to a $7.75 million contract for one year, and also traded for Jhostynxon Garcia.

It’s been an active offseason, and ESPN MLB insider Jeff Passan reported that the Pirates aren’t done either, as the team is looking for more upgrades.

“The Pirates aren’t done, either, and while they aren’t flush enough to play in the Tucker-Bichette-Bellinger sandbox, they’re approaching a $100 million payroll for the first time,” Passan wrote in an article published on Wednesday.

“This is not necessarily a reason to celebrate — owner Bob Nutting needs to show a lot more than one active winter to reengage a fan base scarred by years of negligence — but at least it is one step in a direction with which Pittsburgh is eminently unfamiliar.”

It’s clear the Pirates are looking to spend and build a potential playoff contender, and despite already making plenty of moves, they may not be done.

Pittsburgh hasn’t made the playoffs since the 2015 season when the Pirates lost in the wild-card round.
