The New York Mets reportedly agreed to a three-year, $126 million deal with Bo Bichette on Friday, but that was not the only transaction the team made.

The Mets reportedly claimed Tsung-Che Cheng off waivers from the Tampa Bay Rays, according to his transaction log. He made his MLB debut last season and played in three games for the Pittsburgh Pirates. He came up in the Pirates organization, but was designated for assignment on Dec. 19. The Rays claimed him off waivers on Jan. 7.

The Rays decided they were going to designate him for assignment on Jan. 12. Just four days later, the Mets picked him up. Even though he went hitless in his three games in the big leagues, he is a talented player. He was the Pirates’ No. 9 prospect in 2024.

MLB Pipeline gave him a 60-grade run too, a 60-grade field tool and a 50-grade arm tool. He spent most of last season in Triple-A, slashing .209/.307/.271. He has room to grow as a hitter and could use some more time in Triple-A. However, the talent is there.

He signed with the Pirates as a 17-year-old out of Pu-Men Senior High School in Taiwan. He dominated in High-A a few seasons ago, posting a .980 OPS in 57 games. He is still 23 years old, and likely a little more time in Triple-A away from making an impact in the big leagues.

He has experience playing second base, third base and shortstop. However, a majority of his time has been spent at shortstop. This is a low-risk move for the Mets.
