PHOENIX — Despite online chatter from fans hoping their teams would acquire All-Star Ketel Marte, the Arizona Diamondbacks front office has made it clear it will no longer engage in trade talks involving the veteran infielder.

Marte remains one of baseball’s most versatile and productive players. Coming off back-to-back MVP-caliber seasons, the veteran second baseman was a major topic of the offseason after the D-Backs briefly explored trade possibilities in an effort to add pitching depth and address other areas of need.

The second baseman posted a .283 average with 26 home runs, 72 RBIs and a .893 OPS.

As the star-studded free-agent pool continues to narrow, many baseball fans online have hoped their favorite teams might land Marte via trade.

However, Arizona has now moved on from the idea of dealing its cornerstone player.

“No,” general manager Mike Hazen said when asked if the team would reconsider trading Marte, according to MLB.com’s Steve Gilbert. “Look, we’ve already engaged in that process. I said at the time that I set the deadline for a reason, to avoid this.”

Hazen’s words reflect where the organization stands now. Rather than waiting for hypothetical offers, the Snakes are focused on addressing their needs internally and planning the rest of the offseason with Marte firmly in place.

The message to other teams is clear: the window has closed. Arizona explored the market and gave clubs ample opportunity to present an offer strong enough to justify moving the second baseman. Over the course of roughly a month, no team presented a package the Diamondbacks felt compelled to accept.

With another explicit statement from the front office regarding Marte’s future in the desert, the D-Backs can now turn their full attention to the remainder of their offseason goals.
