After a close knit victory over the New York Yankees on Friday, the Colorado Rockies suffered another blowout loss as the Yankees offense bombarded them for a score of 13-1.
Early southpaw battle
The early goings of the game had all the makings of a classic pitching duel, much like Friday’s game. The Yankees struck first at the start of the game when Aaron Judge launched his 18th home run of the season with two outs. However, Kyle Freeland went to work over the next three innings, navigating three hits and a walk, mostly matching Max Fried pitch for pitch.
There was a bit of hope as the Rockies finally scratched across a run in the fourth. Ezequiel Tovar singled to center field and eventually advanced to second as a pickoff attempt to first kicked away from Paul Goldschmidt for an error. Then, with two outs, Michael Toglia belted a triple to right field, allowing Tovar to score and tie the game 1-1. It was a huge moment for the Rockies and Freeland to build on, but the good feelings didn’t last long.
Fifth Inning Collapse
The Yankees must have taken the run personally as they bombarded Freeland out of the gate to start the fifth. Austin Wells singled and came in to score on a double from Oswald Peraza to give the Yankees the 2-1 lead. Goldschmidt walked and was followed by Trent Grisham, who chopped one up the line that Freeland fielded. Unfortunately, Freeland couldn’t make a clean throw, and Grisham reached and made it to second base, allowing a run to score.
Judge was intentionally walked, and Cody Bellinger drove in a run on a sacrifice fly for the first out of the inning. Anthony Volpe then singled to drive in another run, followed by a Jasson Domínguez sacrifice fly to make it 6-1 with two outs.
Old friend D.J. LeMahieu then singled, driving Freeland from the game. Angel Chivilli entered in relief and immediately threw a wild pitch to advance the two runners on base into scoring position. Wells then doubled in both runs to make it 8-1. A walk to Peraza and another single by Goldschmidt drove in a run, and Grisham capped things off with a two-run double to make it 11-1.
The Yankees ended up scoring 10 runs in the inning as the Rockies committed multiple errors and were bombarded by contact from the New York lineup.
Freeland’s line ended up as eight runs (four earned) on nine hits with three walks and three strikeouts in 4 2⁄3 innings.
Bronx Bombers
The Yankees ended up scoring 13 runs on 21 hits. Every player who stepped up the plate, including pinch hitters, tallied a hit for the Yankees. Six players had multiple hits, including four players with three hits. They had eight extra-base hits, six of which were doubles.
Another key factor for the Yankees was just eight strikeouts against five walks at the plate. It was the eighth time this season that the Rockies have allowed 10 or more runs in a game.
Rockies offense and baserunning was Fried
It was going to be tough for the Rockies to get anything going against Max Fried. That proved to be the case as the lefty ended up going 7 1⁄3 innings, allowing one run on six hits with seven strikeouts and one walk. The Rockies ended up striking out 10 times with just eight hits.
The Rockies also didn’t run the bases well. Jordan Beck was caught stealing and he was also picked off of first base alongside Aaron Schunk.
