The Dodgers reloaded again, stealing yet another high-profile free agent away from the Mets.
Star outfielder Kyle Tucker and the Los Angeles Dodgers are in agreement on a free agent contract, a source confirmed to the Daily News Thursday night. Tucker signed with the two-time defending World Series champs for four years and $240 million. The contract will pay him $60 million per year, the highest AAV in baseball, beating Juan Soto’s by $9 million.
According to sources, the Mets offered Tucker a four-year, $200 million contract — a $50 million AAV with opt outs, plus a signing bonus.
Tucker’s deal with Los Angeles includes opt-outs after the second and third seasons. The right fielder, who will be 29 on Saturday, was considered the best free agent left available. The best remaining fit for the Mets would be outfielder Cody Bellinger, who has been negotiating with the Yankees.
The Toronto Blue Jays were believed to have made a long-term offer to the lefty-swinging corner outfielder. The Mets and Blue Jays have gone after some of the same players in recent winters, only to see them go to Los Angeles.
With its near-perfect weather, it’s picture-perfect ballpark backdrop, and its championship pedigree, Los Angeles is now the premier destination in baseball, and the center of the baseball universe. It should put a baseball-mad city like New York on alert.
This is an especially unique gut punch for the Mets. Closer Edwin Diaz spurned the Mets for the Dodgers a month ago, signing for $69 million over three years with deferrals. The Mets offered $66 million over three years. His decision shocked the club he had been with since 2019: Diaz had told several members of the organization he wanted to return to Queens, but in the end he never gave the Mets a chance to even counter the Los Angeles offer.
Japanese pitchers Yoshinobu Yamamoto and Roki Saskaki have chosen the Dodgers over the Mets in each of the last two offseasons. The Mets also tried to court Shohei Ohtani during his free agency two years ago, but backed off after the two-way superstar showed little interest in return.
Mets president of baseball operations David Stearns dismantled the core of the club this winter, trading Brandon Nimmo and Jeff McNeil, and letting Pete Alonso walk to the Baltimore Orioles. Tucker was expected to be a key replacement. They still need another outfielder, with only Soto and Tyrone Taylor on the active roster. Jared Young is expected to go between Triple-A and the big leagues at first base and left field once again, playing the the same role he did last season.
Carson Benge, a highly-rated prospect, will get a chance to make the team out of spring training.
This is the second time the Mets have tried and failed to obtain Tucker. The club previously tried to trade for Tucker at the deadline in 2019, offering a package to Houston that centered around former Mets right-hander Zack Wheeler. The trade never materialized.
Dodgers manager Dave Roberts will now plug Tucker into a lineup that already includes stars Shohei Ohtani, Mookie Betts and Freddie Freeman. Tucker departs from the Chicago Cubs after slashing .266/.377/.464 with 22 homers and 73 RBI in 2025. He had a down season defensively with -2 OAA, but has been a plus-defender throughout his career.
Tucker is a five-time All-Star who won a World Series with the Houston Astros in 2022.
