The 2024 season for Tyler Callihan was another in which he missed significant time due to injury. He played in just 73 games during the regular season and nearly all of those were in Double-A.

When the 2025 season began the Cincinnati Reds sent Callihan to Triple-A Louisville. In the first four games of the season he would go 3-18 with a home run, a walk, and six strikeouts. Things turned around on April 2nd when he would go 2-5 with a double and a home run against Omaha and from that point forward he just kept hitting for the Bats. Over a 20-game stretch in April he hit .338/.447/.577 for Louisville.
His hot-hitting led to his first big league call up at the end of April. The Reds were playing a doubleheader against St. Louis and Callihan would debut in the first game and then come off the bench in the second game. He went 0-3 on the day. Three days later he would get back on the field, starting against Washington. The left-handed hitter picked up his first hit as a Major League Baseball player that day, lining a single into center field in his first at-bat. That was his only hit of the day.
Two days later Callihan was back in the lineup for Cincinnati in Atlanta. In the bottom of the 3rd inning he tracked down a fly ball down the left field line and as he caught the ball he slammed into the side wall in foul territory. The collision caused him to drop the ball, leading to an inside-the-park-home run as Callihan laid on the ground with an injury. That injury wound up being a fracture of his arm that required him to undergo surgery and miss the remaining five months of the season.

Some people say that staying healthy is a skill. If it is, it’s one that Tyler Callihan had to get better at as he’s missed significant time in four of the last five minor league seasons. He’s had Tommy John surgery. He’s had a severe arm fracture. And he’s had smaller injuries that have led to plenty of missed time, too. Callihan has only played 90 games in a season once in his career and he will turn 26 in the middle of 2026’s season.
When he’s healthy he shown himself to be a solid hitter. He’s never really stood out in any particular offensive category – he’s a career .262/.332/.417 hitter in the minor leagues. But for the most part he’s been an above-average hitter in the minor leagues just not a guy who has been one of the better hitters on his team or in the league.
That’s kind of how you look at the rest of his game, too. He’s got some speed, but he’s not a burner. He can play multiple positions but he’s not above-average at any of them. There’s some pop in his bat, but it’s not above-average.
For the most part, Tyler Callihan is well rounded in that he’s not going to hurt you with any aspect of his game but he’s also not going to stand out in any aspect either. That kind of profile is going to limit the ceiling, but it’s also one that maintains a relatively high floor.
While Callihan isn’t old, he’s getting up there for a prospect. With the 2020 season being wiped out we need to adjust things a little in how we look at players in his age-group. Toss in that he’s also missed so much time with injuries and he’s not like most of his peers in terms of how much time he’s spent on the field. Still, time is running out a bit if he’s going to establish himself as a starter in the big leagues.
There’s plenty of opportunity for him to be a utility guy, though. As a left-handed hitter he can be the strong side of platoon situations. And with his ability to play some infield and outfield that could be quite useful as a guy who gives a manager options nearly every day from a non-starter role.
