Hawaii baseball ends Big West tournament run with loss to Cal Poly

  • May 25, 2025

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – The University of Hawaii baseball team looked to keep their season alive on Saturday in the Big West Tournament.

The ‘Bows faced Cal Poly in their fourth elimination game in seven days in Fullerton, California.

It was a low scoring battle that went all the way to the ninth inning, Hawaii down 2-1, but the Mustangs were able to throw out Xaige Lancaster to win it.

Cal Poly now have a shot at the Big West title against UC Irvine.

Hawaii got on the board in the first inning off a Ben Zeigler-Namoa RBI double, but went silent at the plate the rest of the way.

It was a big day for Freddy Rodriguez, only his second start on the mound and threw six innings allowing one run.

“There’s a lot of great performances in the weekend as a whole but, we’ll be able to reflect on that,” Head coach Rich Hill said following the game. “This just gave all these student athletes just playing to the last weekend, you know, there were so many teams in it and it was just exciting, I thought the Big West did a great job.”

UH ends the year with a 35-21 record. It’s the first time since 1991 and 1992 the ‘Bows have reached 35 wins in back to back seasons.
