The Toronto Blue Jays’ strong offseason took a major blow last week.

Kyle Tucker, whom the Jays were believed to have been frontrunners for all offseason, wound up signing a deal with the LA Dodgers. The next blow came when Bo Bichette, a player many hoped would return after spending his entire career with the Jays, instead signed with the New York Mets.

Now, despite making some significant changes to their pitching staff, the Blue Jays still lack a big bat to relieve pressure on Vladimir Guerrero Jr. The remaining free agent class isn’t particularly enticing, but there are a few players available who could add some pop to their offence.

1. Cody Bellinger

Position: OF
Age: 30
2025 stats: 152 GP, .272, 29 HR, 98 RBI

The best position player that remains up for grabs is Cody Bellinger. The 30-year-old had a solid lone season with the New York Yankees in 2025, finishing 14th in AL MVP voting.

The Yankees remain the frontrunners to bring the 2019 MVP back, though the longer this drags out, you can’t help but wonder what other teams get in the mix. One could be the Blue Jays, who, if they are going to add another bat, would prefer it to be an outfielder.

2. Eugenio Suarez

Position: 3B
Age: 34
2025 stats: 159 GP, .228, 49 HR, 118 RBI

Despite getting up there in age, Eugenio Suarez hasn’t lost his power whatsoever. The 34-year-old won’t hit for a high average, but has hit 30 or more home runs in six different seasons. His 49 this past season, split between the Arizona Diamondbacks and Seattle Mariners, tied his career high from 2019.

The issue with Suarez from the Blue Jays’ perspective is that they don’t need another infielder. Though there was hope that Bichette would return, it would have caused a logjam. Things can change, but he doesn’t look like a realistic target at this point.

3. Luis Arraez

Position: INF/DH
Age: 28
2025 stats: 154 GP, .292, 8 HR, 61 RBI

Luis Arraez has never been a power hitter, but in terms of average, few get on base better. The 28-year-old has hit north of .300 in six of his nine MLB seasons to date.

Arraez also has plenty of versatility, as he can play first, second, and third base. Again, however, the Blue Jays already have plenty of infielders under contract, making this a difficult fit to envision.

4. Harrison Bader

Position: OF
Age: 31
2025 stats: 146 GP, .277, 17 HR, 54 RBI

Harrison Bader wasn’t at the top of anyone’s list when free agency began, but he’s one of the better players available as we approach late January. The 31-year-old was one of the Philadelphia Phillies best players down the stretch of 2025 after being acquired from the Minnesota Twins.

From a positional standpoint, Bader is more of a realistic option than a few others on this list. Whether he provides any sort of upgrade over what they already have is something that GM Ross Atkins and his staff will need to decide.

5. Marcell Ozuna

Position: OF/DH
Age: 35
2025 stats: 145 GP, .232, 21 HR, 68 RBI

After being one of the best hitters in all of baseball in 2024, a season in which he finished fourth in NL MVP voting, Marcell Ozuna came crashing down in 2025. Those struggles have played a large part in why he remains on the free-agent market.

The issue with Ozuna is that his defence has declined to the point that he is relied on solely in a DH role. The Blue Jays have often opted to swap who they use as their DH in order to give players a rest. That said, there is definitely intrigue around Ozuna, who, at his best, has the capability to be one of the better hitters in all of baseball.
