Japanese Star Kazuma Okamoto Makes MLB Decision: Report

Japanese third baseman Kazuma Okamoto has reportedly reached an agreement with the Toronto Blue Jays, sources with knowledge of the situation confirmed to ESPN‘s Jeff Passan.

“BREAKING: Japanese third baseman Kazuma Okamoto and the Toronto Blue Jays are in agreement on a free agent contract, sources tell ESPN,” Passan wrote on his X account.

Okamoto, 29, is coming off a season in which he hit .327/.416/.598 with 15 home runs in just 69 games for the Yomiuri Giants of the Nippon Professional Baseball League in Japan. The infielder was a six-time Nippon Professional Baseball All-Star, a three-time Central League home run leader, a two-time Central League RBI leader and a two-time Mitsui Golden Glove Award winner.

Okamoto is the second Japanese third baseman and third player to sign with an MLB team following Munetaka Murakami, who signed with the Chicago White Sox last month, and starting pitcher Tatsuya Imai, who signed with the Houston Astros on Thursday (January 1). Okamoto hit one more home run than Murakami since he entered Japan’s Nippon Professional Baseball league in 2018 and has a “much higher floor as a player,” however, Murakami is more than three years younger and has higher “peaks in home run total” and “high-end exit velocities,” according to Passan.

The decision came hours after it was \u003ca href=\”https://www.iheart.com/content/2026-01-20-new-audio-reveals-twist-in-actor-timothy-busfields-disturbing-case/\” target=\”_blank\”>revealed that the underage twin boys accusing the actor of child sex abuse said he didn’t touch them when they initially spoke to investigators\u003c/a>, according to newly released audio in the ongoing case obtained by \u003ca href=\”https://nypost.com/2026/01/19/us-news/timothy-busfields-accusers-initially-said-he-didnt-touch-them-report/\” target=\”_blank\”>\u003cem>the New York Post\u003c/em>\u003c/a>.\u003c/p>\n\n\u003cp>The 11-year-old child actors, identified only by their initials \u003cstrong>VL\u003c/strong> and \u003cstrong>SL\u003c/strong>, first spoke to police in connection with the serious allegations on November 2024, at which point an officer asked, "You know no on can touch your private areas?"\u003c/p>\n\n\u003cp>"Yes," the boys responded.\u003c/p>\n\n\u003cp>The officer then asked if Busfield had ever touched their private areas, which both boys appeared to have denied.\u003c/p>\n\n\u003cp>"But he didn’t touch that part," SL responded.\u003c/p>\n\n\u003cp>"No, he’s never touched me," VL said in a separate clip.\u003c/p>\n\n\u003cp>Busfield’s attorney presented the audio in a New Mexico court on Monday (January 19), calling it an "unequivocal denial" by the children that they were touched inappropriately by the actor. Busfield turned himself in to the Albuquerque Police Department last Tuesday (January 13), but denied the "horrible" accusations, claiming he "did not do anything to those little boys" in a video message shared by his lawyer to \u003ca href=\”https://www.tmz.com/2026/01/13/timothy-busfield-surrenders-child-sex-abuse/\” target=\”_blank\”>\u003cem>TMZ\u003c/em>\u003c/a> prior to his arrest.\u003c/p>\n\n\u003cp>“I’m going to confront these lies, they’re horrible,” Busfield said in the video. “They are all lies and I did not do anything to those little boys. And I’m going to fight it. I’m going to fight it with a great team, and I’m going to be exonerated. I love everybody for supporting me.”\u003c/p>\n\n\u003cp>Busfield was declared missing, which led to the U.S. Marshals Service joining the search for him after the arrest warrant was issued. The actor claimed he traveled 2,000 miles to Albuquerque upon learning that he faced charges on January 9.\u003c/p>\n\n\u003cp>One of the victims claimed the alleged incidents began when he and his brother were 7 years old. An investigation into Busfield began in November 2024, when a doctor at the University of New Mexico Hospital contacted police about suspected sexual abuse and grooming involving minors, the arrest warrant states.\u003c/p>\n\n\u003cp>The Albuquerque Police Department initially declined to press charges against the actor, however, the case was reopened in September 2025 after one of the victims told his counselor and later his pediatrician that Busfield "touched him on his bottom," according to the affidavit. A hearing is scheduled for Tuesday (January 20) to determine whether Busfield will be released on bail pending trial.\u003c/p>\n\n\u003cp>Busfield turned himself in to the Albuquerque Police Department last Tuesday (January 13), but denied the "horrible" accusations, claiming he "did not do anything to those little boys" in a video message shared by his lawyer to \u003ca href=\”https://www.tmz.com/2026/01/13/timothy-busfield-surrenders-child-sex-abuse/\” target=\”_blank\”>\u003cem>TMZ\u003c/em>\u003c/a> prior to his arrest.\u003c/p>\n\n\u003cp>“I’m going to confront these lies, they’re horrible,” Busfield said in the video. “They are all lies and I did not do anything to those little boys. And I’m going to fight it. I’m going to fight it with a great team, and I’m going to be exonerated. I know I am because this is all so wrong and all lies.\u003c/p>\n\n\u003cp>“So hang in there, and hopefully I’m out real soon and back to work. I love everybody for supporting me.”\u003c/p>\n\n\u003cp>Busfield was declared missing, which led to the U.S. Marshals Service joining the search for him after the arrest warrant was issued. The actor claimed he traveled 2,000 miles to Albuquerque upon learning that he faced charges on January 9.\u003c/p>\n\n\u003cp>One of the victims claimed the alleged incidents began when he and his brother were 7 years old. An investigation into Busfield began in November 2024, when a doctor at the University of New Mexico Hospital contacted police about suspected sexual abuse and grooming involving minors, the arrest warrant states.\u003c/p>\n\n\u003cp>The Albuquerque Police Department initially declined to press charges against the actor, however, the case was reopened in September 2025 after one of the victims told his counselor and later his pediatrician that Busfield "touched him on his bottom," according to the affidavit. Busfield was also accused of telling the children to call him "Uncle Tim" and tickling them, the arrest warrant states.\u003c/p>\n\n\u003cp>The director, who is married to actress \u003cstrong>Melissa Gilbert\u003c/strong>, reportedly told investigators that it was "highly likely" that he had "physical contact" with the twin child actors during the filming of \u003cem>The Cleaning Lady\u003c/em> during a phone call in November.\u003c/p>\n\n\u003cp>“I don’t remember those boys,” Busfield said, according to the affidavit. “No, I don’t. I don’t actually, I don’t remember it, if it happened. I don’t remember overtly tickling the boys ever, but it wouldn’t be uncommon for me.”\u003c/p>\n\n\u003cp>Busfield also told police that \u003cstrong>Elodie Yung\u003c/strong>, the lead actress on \u003cem>The Cleaning Lady\u003c/em>, told him that the twins’ mother was seeking "revenge" after the children weren’t invited back for the show’s final season.
