Over the last three years, the Philadelphia Phillies have been a left-handed-hitting-heavy roster. This has created a dynamic where the right-handed hitters on the team are more valuable compared to those on many other Major League Baseball teams.
The Phillies have relied on guys like Edmundo Sosa, Austin Hays, and Otto Kemp in roles where they play against Left-Handed pitchers. But these guys are also valuable because they can play multiple positions.
One of those right-handed hitting utility players from the last three years has found a new team for the 2026 MLB season.
When the Phillies made it official that they re-signed starting Catcher JT Realmuto earlier this week, the organization had to make a corresponding move to put the two-time Gold Glove award winner on the 40-man roster.
Philadelphia designated Weston Wilson for Assignment in order to make room on the big league roster for JT Reamuto. Since Wilson was out of Minor League Options, he was subject to Waivers, and if he cleared, there was the opportunity for him to get assigned to Phillies Minor League Spring Training.
But Wilson did not make it through waivers, and his rights were claimed by the Baltimore Orioles. Finishing the 2025 MLB season with a 75-87 record, the Orioles had one of the worst team offenses in the American League last season. Wilson should get a really opportunity to compete for a spot on the Orioles’ 26-man roster.
In 100 games played with the Phillies over the last three seasons, Weston Wilson had Nine Home Runs and 29 Runs Batted In. Even though he played 57 games in the Outfield, Wilson also has experience playing at Third Base (7 games), Second Base (16), and First Base (13).
The Philadelphia Phillies X account attached an announcement that the Orioles claimed Wilson off waivers with the following message: “Wishing Wes nothing but the best”.
Without Wilson, the Phillies are expected to lean on Otto Kemp as one of their primary Right-Handed Utility Player who can play both Left Field, Third Base, and First Base. Edmundo Sosa can play all four Infield positions, and can be used as an Outfielder if needed.
