The Chicago Cubs have been one of the more active teams this offseason in terms of acquiring talent, and they are continuing to do so. After adding third baseman Alex Bregman and starting pitcher Edward Cabrera, the team still felt there were places the team could improve. While it is not a massive splash, they were able to add a former World Series Champion to their roster. Let’s take a closer look at who it is and what it means for the Cubs going into the 2026 season.

The Cubs have signed 30-year-old outfielder Chas McCormick to a minor league contract, per The Athletic’s Chandler Rome. The contract includes an invitation to the major-league camp for Spring Training to compete to make the 26-man roster for Opening Day. McCormick has struggled to be consistent at the plate throughout his five-year career, but he was part of the 2022 Houston Astros, who won the World Series. He has played in 500 career games and has posted a .734 OPS with 56 home runs and 37 stolen bases.

McCormick has played all three outfield positions, so if he makes the Cubs roster, he can be a fourth outfielder to give one of the starters a day off. This is not a major signing, but is something that will help the depth of the roster as the team heads into Spring Training. If he makes the big leagues out of Spring Training, that is great for them, but there is no harm in this deal for the Cubs. This deal is as a non-roster invitee, so he is not on the 40-man roster at this moment.

It will be intriguing to see if a change of scenery will help him be more productive at the plate. McCormick was limited to only 77 combined games (66 in majors, 11 in minors), so if he can remain healthy, he may be a factor for Chicago in 2026.
