The Los Angeles Dodgers are arguably the most popular MLB team in Japan, especially with the recent addition of three Japanese-born superstars: Shohei Ohtani, Yoshinobu Yamamoto and Roki Sasaki.
Going into the 2025 season, Ohtani and Yamamoto had just won their first World Series championships with the Dodgers. Meanwhile, Sasaki was preparing for his rookie season in MLB after signing with the Dodgers as a free agent.

The trio had the opportunity to go back to Japan for MLB Opening Day Games against the Chicago Cubs to start what would become another World Series championship season for the Dodgers. In addition to the trio, Cubs right fielder Seiya Suzuki and starting pitcher Shota Imanaga were also visiting their home country for the Opening Day games.
A new film called, “HOMECOMING: THE TOKYO SERIES”, followed the five Japanese-born MLB players as they returned to their home country for the games. It also highlights how they developed into the players they are today.
“As the 2025 MLB Opening Day games between the Los Angeles Dodgers and Chicago Cubs approach in Tokyo, hometown heroes Shohei Ohtani, Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Roki Sasaki, Shota Imanaga and Seiya Suzuki return to where their baseball dreams began. Through the lives of those shaped by the game, the film reveals how baseball bridges generations, connects nations and reflects the balance between tradition and modern life. More than a chronicle of a sporting event, it is a portrait of a nation’s enduring love for baseball and the pride of watching its stars come home,” wrote the American Cinematheque.
The film will premiere at the Egyptian Theatre on Saturday, Jan. 31 at 6:00 pm. There will also be a Q&A segment with filmmaker Jason Sterman during the event.

There are still a few more months until the Dodgers will be back on the field seeking a third straight World Series title. But this film is the perfect opportunity to get an inside look into the lives and cultures of Ohtani, Yamamoto and Sasaki before the 2026 season begins.
General admission tickets start at $20 and are available for purchase here.
