AKRON, Ohio – The Akron RubberDucks are rebranding for two nights this season.
The Ducks will become the Akron Chip Dippers on Friday, June 19, and Saturday, June 20, as part of the team’s continued Only in Akron series, which uses food endemic to the region as a theme for a temporary nickname. The team previously used Cheese Salads and Galley Boys in the series, among other names.
The name honors Lawson’s French Onion Chip Dip.

Lawson’s has a long historic story. It started as a milk company in Cuyahoga Falls. Lawson’s convenience stores were omnipresent in Ohio from the 1960s through the mid-’80s. They were sold to Dairy Mart. In 2003, Circle K bought Dairy Mart but kept producing the dip.
The popularity of Lawson’s chip dip inspired other Ohio companies like Toft’s Dairy and Smith’s Dairy to launch their own French onion chip dips throughout the state.
“We are excited to pay homage to Akron’s favorite chip companion,” RubberDucks President and General Manager Jim Pfander said in a press release. “Chip dip has been a major part of Akron get togethers for decades.”
Fans can buy a “Chip Dippers” ticket package and receive a ticket to either game and an Akron Chip Dippers hat. It’s $45 and can be purchased at gofevo.com/group/AkronChipDippers2026. Full Akron Chip Dippers merchandise will be available later.
The RubberDucks open their season at 7 17 Credit Union Park at 6:35 p.m. Thursday, April 2, against the Reading Fightin Phils.
The Ducks will play the Altoona Curve on the pair of Chip Dippers Only in Akron series dates.
