The Porterville College baseball team swept the California Community College Baseball Coaches Association Northern California Player and Pitcher of the Week honors for the first week of the season this past weekend.

Designated hitter Josh Myers was named Player of the Week while Chris Blanco was named Pitcher of the Week.

Myers, a freshman from Idaho Falls, Idaho, slugged home runs in each of his three games this past weekend as the Pirates went 2-1, beating Rio Hondo and splitting a doubleheader with Diablo Valley.

Myers hit .500, going 5-for-10 and all his hits were extra base hits as he also had a triple and a double. One of his home runs was a grand slam.

He had 7 RBI and slugged at a 1.700 in the three games. Myers stole a base and hit a sacrifice fly as well.

Blanco, a freshman from Denver, is the region’s top pitcher after firing a 7-inning, complete-game, 4-hit shutout against Diablo Valley in a 3-0 win on Saturday in the nightcap of a doubleheader. Blanco struck out nine, walked two and hit a batter, throwing 60 of his 98 pitches for strikes.

MONACHE 62, EL DIAMANTE 34

It was an historic night for Monache’s Gabriel Carbajal in the Maraurders 62-34 win at El Diamante on Tuesday. Carbajal reached 500 career rebounds and scored 24 points on his way to reaching the 1,000-point milestone.

Carbajal now has 990 career points and can reach 1,000 points when Monache plays at Redwood at 7:15 p.m. today. Monache (16-8, 5-2 in the East Yosemite League) controlled the game throughout against El Diamante, leading 35-20 at halftime. Tyson Harrington scored 18 points and Cooper Baxter added six points against El Diamante.
