College baseball: Surry hopes to get started on Feb. 7

DOBSON — Once again, the Surry Community College Knights will have a large aggregation of local baseball players.

The Knights have even more local players on the roster than Catawba College, with four from West Rowan, three from Carson, two from South Rowan and one from A.L. Brown.

West — Brice Knox, Eli Graham, Gaige Scruggs, Ben Koontz.

All four are freshmen. Knox was a versatile player for Rowan County Legion last summer and could be used in the outfield or outfield. Graham is a middle infielder. Scruggs is primarily a catcher. Koontz is an outfielder.

Carson — Nolan Tovornik, Will Bradshaw, TJ Harris.

Tovornik is a sophomore pitcher. Bradshaw redshirted last season and is listed as a third baseman.

Harris is a first baseman.

South — Brett Morris, Aaron Jones. Morris is a sophomore first baseman/pitcher.

He homered in the World Series last season. Jones is a sophomore shortstop.

A.L. Brown — Jaden Johnson.

Johnson is a sophomore outfielder.

There’s also Mooresville grad Southern Smith-Tilley, who played for Rowan Legion in the summer of 2024.

Surry has had quite a few success stories. West Rowan grad Matthew Connolly played a year at Surry and was Region Player of the Year in 2024 before transferring to Catawba. West Rowan grad Elijah Palmer played two years at Surry and was Region Player of the Year in 2025. He’s now a junior at St. Bonaventure.
