The A’s are reportedly on the verge of extending another one of their young stars. Shortstop Jacob Wilson and the team have reportedly agreed to a seven-year extension that ties him to the team for the long haul:
The deal will reportedly pay Wilson $70 million overall and gives the team a club option for an additional eighth year. That is a steal for the A’s after Wilson’s highly successful rookie campaign that saw him start the All-Star Game and come in second in Rookie of the Year voting to teammate Nick Kurtz. And he might have made that race closer if he didn’t suffer a wrist injury in the middle of his first season. The shortstop was a contact machine as he slashed .311/.355/.444 with 13 long balls and just 39 strikeouts. The right-handed hitter might not stick at shortstop with Leo De Vries coming soon but he’ll certainly be a fixture atop of the Athletics lineup for the longterm thanks to this deal.

Wilson joins Tyler Soderstrom, Lawrence Butler, and Brent Rooker as players that have signed recent extensions. This truly is a new era for the team as it finally feels like we can get attached to some of these guys. Now we can go get our Wilson jerseys. Next up: let’s get a deal done with our first baseman.
