The last year or so has been a time of significant change for the Minnesota Twins. News out today is another big shake-up for Minnesota’s MLB team.
It was announced Friday morning (January 30) that Minnesota’s President of Baseball Operations, Derek Falvey, and the Twins organization have “mutually agreed to part ways.
This is another high-profile change after the team had a big sell-off of some of their talent last summer before the trade deadline and then later fired manager Rocco Baldelli at the end of the 2025 season.
The announcement came in three parts: a formal announcement about the “mutual agreement to part ways” along with separate statements from Falvey and Twins Executive Chair Tom Pohlad, all shared by the team on Friday morning.
The official announcement highlighted the mutual decision between the team and Falvey to part ways, along with how the Twins will move forward after the departure.
Falvey has been with the Twins since 2016, hired as the Executive Vice President and Chief Baseball Officer in October of 2016. He was elevated to President of Baseball Operations in 2019. While with the team, the Twins highlight a 690-666 (.509) record with four postseason appearances (2017, 2019, 2020, 2023).
The Minnesota Twins say Executive Vice President and General Manager Jeremy Zoll will continue to handle the organization’s baseball department while Tom Pohlad will take on oversight of the team’s business operations in an interim capacity.
On the departure, Falvey commented with an extensive statement that opened by saying,
“Following a series of thoughtful conversations with Tom that began after the ownership transition and progressed over the past few weeks, we both agreed this was the right time for us to part ways.”
The statement (which can be read here) continues to explain that in times of ownership transition, natural “moments of reflection and honest dialogue” about vision and direction occur.
Falvey said, “I’ve been incredibly fortunate to spend this chapter of my career with the Minnesota Twins.” He shared gratitude to the fans for their passion and loyalty as well as to the team’s ownership for the opportunity and trust placed in him during his time with the team, concluding by saying he will be taking some time to reflect on what’s next for him, sharing time with his family until deciding what “the next chapeter” will be for him.
Twins Executive Chair Tom Pohlad provided a shorter statement, offering similar sentiments about the mutual “candid conversations” about leadership, structure, and the future of the club. In the end, he says, “We reached a shared understanding that the needs of the organization are evolving and that a leadership transition is the best way to move forward.”

Pohlad offered thanks to Falvey for his contributions to the organization during his nearly decade with the team. He concluded by explaining his interim role overseeing team operations will be just that, commenting:
“While we value our foundation, our commitment to building a championship caliber organization requires decisiveness and urgency. We will immediately begin a search for a President of Business Operations who, along with General Manager Jeremy Zoll, will report to me.”
The Twins have a lot of work ahead of them, not only in the upcoming 2026 season, but also beyond. Pohlad offered remarks in December of 2025 about how he is “well aware of how fans feel”.
He said, “I think the work in front of us is to re-engage this community in Twins Baseball.” Pohlad continued, “I think they’ve (fans) lost trust and confidence in our family as owners, and as a result, this organization.” He explained that this is what is at the core of “why we’re going through the transition we are”, to earn back that trust.
This departure with Falvey appears to be the next piece of that effort to hit the reset button and try to re-engage fans.
Will it work? Time will tell. But speaking as a fan, I can say there is a lot of work to be done. Especially after last year, fans feel particularly exhausted. We’ll see how long it takes for Tom’s plans to take shape, or if they work out.
