Gunshots, potential standoff in northeast Wichita county

  • February 2, 2026

UPDATE: The Wichita County Sheriff’s Office released a statement on Sunday, February 1, with more details on the incident.

WSCO deputies responded to a disturbance involving a weapon at approximately 3:22 p.m.

WSCO says upon arrival to the 5200 block of FM 1177, a barricaded subject was found to have fired several gunshots. After a lengthy standoff, officials say the subject engaged with officers resulting in an officer involved shooting.

The incident is currently under investigation by the Wichita County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigation Division, the Wichita County District Attorney’s Office and the Texas Rangers.

There was no word on any injuries to either the subject or officers. WSCO says more updates on this case will be released as the investigation goes on.

WICHITA FALLS, Texas (KAUZ) – A large law enforcement presence was reported Saturday along FM 1177 near the Wichita and Clay county line following reports of gunfire in the area.

According to a News Channel 6 crew on scene, dozens of shots were heard being fired. Authorities were observed using drones and megaphones as the situation unfolded.

As night fell, lights were turned off on all vehicles at the scene, including an Air Evac helicopter.

The Wichita County Sheriff’s Office appeared to be the lead agency at the scene. State troopers, Texas Game Wardens, the Burkburnett Fire Department and AMR were also present. A Department of Public Safety officer on scene confirmed that a Texas Ranger had responded as well.

Our crew attempted to obtain additional information at the scene but was told a press release from the Wichita County Sheriff’s Office would be issued once the situation is cleared.

This is a developing story. Updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
