The Philadelphia Phillies, after coming up short in the NLDS against the Los Angeles Dodgers, were looking to make some notable upgrades to the roster.
But after re-signing Kyle Schwarber, J.T. Realmuto, and adding a few players like Adolis Garcia and Brad Keller, the Phillies’ offseason wasn’t a majorly transformative one like fans were hoping for.
This mediocre offseason, with fear the Phillies are simply running it back again, led to ex-MLB GM Jim Bowden of The Athletic to hand the Phillies a C+ grade for their offseason.
Phillies get C+ grade for offseason from an ex-MLB GM
Amid the Phillies’ offseason moves this winter, Bowden asked a very simple question: “Have they kept this team together for too long?”
Despite having the chance to make some major changes to the roster, the Phillies aren’t doing so and will have a few smaller changes to the roster for the 2026 season.
Schwarber and Realmuto returning isn’t the worst, but combined with the return of Alec Bohm and the outfield not being improved upon from a year ago, it’s not hard to understand the qualms Bowden has with the Phillies’ offseason.

While Bowden likes the moves with Schwarber, Realmuto, and even Garcia, the overall offseason for the Phillies was not one that instilled confidence.
Bowden predicts the Phillies will finish third place in the NL East behind both the Atlanta Braves and the New York Mets. While they have a good team, their lack of upgrades and stagnation leaves much to be desired with this Phillies team.
The Phillies are seemingly running it back, and Bowden’s concern over such a situation is the reason why he only gave the Phillies a C+ grade for their offseason moves.
