(WTVY) – Former St. Louis Cardinal Brendan Donovan is trading in his red and white for navy and teal, as the All-Star infielder heads west to join the Seattle Mariners.
Donovan was traded late Monday night as part of a three-team deal that helps solidify Seattle’s projected 2026 lineup. The Mariners also agreed to a two-year, $5.8 million contract with the versatile infielder.
The trade involved the Mariners, St. Louis Cardinals, and Tampa Bay Rays. Tampa Bay received third baseman Ben Williamson, while the Cardinals acquired multiple players in return, including pitcher Jurrangelo Cijntje. Seattle gave up two first-round draft picks and a second-rounder to complete the deal.
Mariners President of Baseball Operations Jerry Dipoto praised the move, calling Donovan an ideal addition.
“It’s tough to imagine a better fit for our current team than Brendan,” Dipoto said.
Donovan, an All-Star infielder, has primarily played second base throughout his four-year MLB career, but Seattle is expected to evaluate him at third base during spring training. His defensive versatility was a major factor in the Mariners’ decision, as the team was seeking a reliable bat that could contribute across the infield.
Offensively, Donovan brings proven production. Over his career, he has totaled 40 home runs, 97 doubles, five triples, and 202 RBIs, making him a consistent presence in the lineup. His arrival also makes him one of five All-Stars projected to be part of Seattle’s roster.
Donovan made history in St. Louis as the first rookie in Cardinals franchise history to win a Gold Glove Award, cementing his reputation as both a strong defender and a steady offensive contributor.
Now, Donovan brings his confident, high-energy style to Seattle, where the Mariners hope he becomes a long-term cornerstone as they push toward postseason success.
Mariners general manager Justin Hollander said “Brendan brings a unique blend of elite top-of-the-lineup traits and versatility that makes him a perfect fit for our roster. we are excited to welcome him to Seattle.”
He went to Enterprise High School from 2012 to 2015. He then went on to play baseball at the University of South Alabama from 2016 to 2018 before he was drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals in the 7th round.
