In June of last year, the Boston Red Sox made a blockbuster trade with the San Francisco Giants, acquiring James Thibbs III, Kyle Harrison, and Jordan Hicks in exchange for Rafael Devers. Well, Boston traded away Thibbs III last July, and on Sunday, Jordan Hicks is now also on the move.

According to ESPN’s Jeff Passan, the Chicago White Sox are acquiring Jordan Hicks and pitching prospect David Sandlin from the Red Sox. Chris Cotillo reports that it’s minor league pitcher Gage Ziehl who is headed to Boston. Boston is also sending 8$ million of Hicks’ $24 million to Chicago.

Red Sox Trade Jordan Hicks to White Sox

Jordan Hicks is not headed to his fifth MLB organization. He’s had a very up-and-down career, but this is a solid move for Boston, considering how poorly he pitched with the Red Sox after coming over from San Francisco.

In 18.2 innings with the Red Sox last season, Hicks posted an 8.20 ERA and surrendered 17 earned runs. He hadn’t been much better during his time with the Giants last year either. Over 48.2 innings with San Francisco, he recorded a 6.47 ERA. Hicks’ strikeout numbers are down, and his walk rate continues to climb.

Hicks had started to look like a dominant pitcher; he’s always been promised to be back in 2024 by posting a 4.10 ERA over 20 starts with the Giants, but injuries, and again not being able to command the strikezone led to a big regression in ’25.

Now, it’s the White Sox, who are steadily making moves this offseason, who is taking a chance on Hicks once again.

David Sandlin is a pitching prospect in the Red Sox organization. He had a 4.50 ERA over 100+ innings across two minor league teams (Worcester & Portland).

What Does This Move Mean For Red Sox?

The Red Sox have now traded two players they acquired in the Rafael Devers trade. The Red Sox’s relationship with Devers had been tarnished, but now, considering Boston was also unable to retain Alex Bregman to be Devers’ replacement at third, this trade continues to look increasingly more lopsided in favor of San Francisco.

Kyle Harrison is the lone name left in the Red Sox organization from that Devers deal, and he pitched just 12 innings with Boston last season, and might not even have a path into the starting rotation at this moment.

Boston continues to have very solid starting pitching depth, and they should feel blessed to be in that position, but one could also argue the Red Sox would much rather enjoy the services of Rafael Devers compared to Kyle Harrison.
