PARMA, Ohio — Cleveland bestselling author Daniel Coyle (“The Culture Code” and “The Talent Code”) has spent decades studying how people and teams thrive.
For his recently released book, “FLOURISH: The Art of Building Meaning, Joy, and Fulfillment,” the Alaska native and Northeast Ohio transplant explored how building connected and energized environments leads to successful communities.
“My gig as a writer has always meant to look for the machinery that’s beneath the magic,” said Coyle, who will be speaking at 7 p.m. Feb. 12 at the Cuyahoga Public Library Parma-Snow Branch. “You see something magical. What’s going on there? That’s kind of been my approach.
“This is the third piece of that trilogy where we’re going from individual to group into kind of like the biggest questions of what makes for a rich and fulfilling life.”

After five years researching everything from a tiny Vermont town that produced 11 Olympians to a Paris neighborhood rebuilt around Sunday dinners, Coyle discovered a pattern where thriving happens when people slow down, connect and participate in something larger than themselves.
“This book is about joy and meaning,” he said.
“Most of all, it’s about community. It makes the case that creating community is one of the most kind of transformative skills.”
More so, the new book shows that flourishing isn’t luck or personality.
Instead, it’s built through presence, connection and simple daily practices.
As for landing on the concept of community, Coyle noted living in Cleveland Heights opened his eyes.
“This new project is about the power of community and I don’t know that I would’ve come to it in the same way if I weren’t spending a big chunk of time here,” he said.
“For a bunch of reasons, Cleveland has a lot of incredible communities that we’ve been lucky enough to be a part of and brought me in contact with.”
Such as with the Cleveland Guardians.
For roughly a dozen years, Coyle has been a consultant to the Major League Baseball team.
“They’re a big chapter in the new book,” he said.
“It’s been really formative to kind of be in an ecosystem like Cleveland that embodies so powerfully how much community can add to your life.”
The upcoming Parma appearance finds City Club of Cleveland CEO and award-winning journalist Dan Moulthrop facilitating the conversation, which Coyle noted will invariably include plenty of Guardians and spring training talk.

In fact, that’s where he’s headed a few days after the Parma event.
“One of the fun things has been working with the Guardians,” he said. “I know Dan is very aware of how the Guardians kind of embody what it means to be a high-performing, good-culture organization — and doing it on a low budget — just kind of adding up more than the sum of their parts and always competing.
“That might be something that people are going to be interested in exploring.”
