MITCHELL — For the second year in a row, mild weather in Mitchell is allowing the Dakota Wesleyan University baseball team to start its season at home.

The Tigers announced on Tuesday they will host Valley City State for a four-game series starting Saturday at Drake Field. The Saturday doubleheader will begin at 1 p.m., and Sunday’s twin bill starts at noon.

Saturday’s high temperature in Mitchell is forecast at 50 degrees, while Sunday is a forecast high of 51, according to the National Weather Service.

The two teams also opened the 2025 season with a doubleheader on Jan. 30 at Drake Field in Mitchell, believed to be the earliest home opener in DWU baseball history.

Previously, DWU’s season-opening series was supposed to be Feb. 14-15 in Joplin, Missouri against Clarke (Iowa) and College of the Ozarks, with DWU home games on Feb. 21 against DIckinson State.

DWU was picked to finish eighth in the GPAC preseason poll out of 11 teams. The Tigers were 13-37 overall in 2025 and 11-17 in league play.

Our newsroom occasionally reports stories under a byline of “Mitchell Republic.” Often, the “Mitchell Republic” byline is used when rewriting basic news briefs that originate from official sources, such as a city press release about a road closure, and which require little or no reporting. At times, this byline is used when a news story includes numerous authors or when the story is formed by aggregating previously reported news from various sources. If outside sources are used, it is noted within the story.
