The New York Mets have been rebuilding their roster in a major way this offseason. Pete Alonso, Brandon Nimmo, Jeff McNeil, and Edwin Diaz are all gone.
Bo Bichette, Luis Robert Jr., and Freddy Peralta, among plenty of other free agent and trade pickups, have reshaped the roster. The Mets aren’t likely done this offseason, but a recent trade rumor is an unexpected twist for the Mets.
According to Andrew Fillipponi of 937 The Fan, the Mets are reportedly getting interest from the Pittsburgh Pirates on Brett Baty and Mark Vientos. Thanks to Bichette’s addition, Baty or Vientos could be available, and the Pirates are rumored to be in pursuit.
Mets trade rumor reveals unexpected Brett Baty, Mark Vientos Pirates link
“SOURCES: The Pirates have been engaged in trade talks with the NY Mets,” Fillipponi reports, “and are pursuing Brett Baty or Mark Vientos. Both play 3B. But have been uprooted from that position because of the Mets’ offseason moves. Asking price is high, but something can still get done.”
The Mets trading away one of Vientos or Baty this offseason wouldn’t be a surprise. With Bichette taking over at third base and Marcus Semien at second base, the Mets don’t have a clear spot for either.
One could be a designated hitter, while Baty could try to move to the outfield. But the Mets could also look to add elsewhere on their roster this offseason instead.

Both Baty and Vientos are 26 years old. Moving on from either could net a strong return, but the Mets, looking to contend, likely won’t move either for simple prospect returns.
Landing players to help the roster in 2026, or at least using the Pirates to swing a three-team trade to improve the roster in some capacity, is something the Mets could feasibly trade one of Baty or Vientos for.
But, neither should be dealt for the simple purpose of clearing roster space. They’re both important players and will factor into the roster this upcoming season.
This report from Filipponi is just a rumor, but it’s one to, at the very least, keep in mind as the offseason progresses. Baty or Vientos could still be on the move, and the Pirates might be a landing spot.
