The New York Yankees have been heavily criticized this offseason because of their lack of moves. Still, they’ve stayed the course and are seemingly ready to run it back with a very similar roster to the one they had last season.

But they’re still working out the kinks on their 40-man roster.

On Wednesday, the Yankees opted to claim outfielder Yanquiel Fernandez off waivers. In the corresponding move, the Yankees opted to designate pitcher Dom Hamel for assignment a short while later.

New York Yankees hat

Hamel, 26, was originally a 2021 third-round draft pick of the New York Mets. Hamel has spent most of his professional career with the Mets, even cracking the big leagues last season. The young pitcher made one appearance with the Mets last season.

His time with the Yankees was short, too. Hamel came over to the Yankees this offseason and didn’t last until the season. Now the Yankees move forward with Fernandez on their roster, but Hamel is left looking for a job.

It shouldn’t take Hamel long to find a new home. There are likely going to be plenty of teams pursuing him now that the Yankees have designated him for assignment. Hamel should have a new team by the end of February at the latest.
