The Rangers are expected to lose four players to the World Baseball Classic for at least some portion of spring training, with late-inning lefty Robert Garcia being the most significant.

Garcia, who could vie for the closer’s role, is expected to pitch for Team Mexico, a person with knowledge of the rosters told The Dallas Morning News. He joins outfielder Alejandro Osuna, whose participation was confirmed on Tuesday.

In addition, pitchers Nabil Crismatt and Cal Quantrill are expected to participate for Colombia and Canada, respectively. Both will be in camp on minor league contracts with a chance to battle for a long relief spot or as rotation depth.

The tournament runs from March 5 through the 17th.

Canada and Colombia are designated for Pool A, which begins play in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Puerto Rico, Cuba and Panama are also in the pool. Quantrill pitched for Canada in 2023, starting against Great Britain, but he struggled with control and didn’t make it out of the first inning. It was an omen of things to come. After going 15-5 with Cleveland in 2022, he was just 4-7 with a 5.24 ERA in 2023.

Given the depth of the pool, it may be difficult for either Canada or Colombia to advance, though Puerto Rico has run into significant issues getting insurance for a number of its players.

Mexico is in Pool B with the United States, Italy, Great Britain and Brazil and begins play March 6 in Houston. After the U.S., Mexico is considered the deepest roster in the pool, which could extend its stay in the tournament. Two teams from each pool move on to the elimination rounds.
