It’s gotten to the point this offseason where starting pitcher Zac Gallen has become one of the most coveted free agents in all of MLB, and there is starting to be growing speculation that a reunion with the Arizona Diamondbacks is now plausible.

Gallen himself recently went on a local Phoenix news station to talk about his ongoing free agency, and it should be a good message to hear if you’re a Diamondbacks fan because it seems like Gallen is being embraced from many angles.

What Did Zac Gallen Say?

Speaking with Fox 10 Phoenix’s Blake Niemann, Zac Gallen revealed how the free agency process is going, and his thoughts on a potential reunion with Arizona:

“I think people understand what Phoenix means to me,” said Gallen when asked about the possibility of returning. “My wife is from here. I’m calling this home base now, so for us to be here would be awesome. It’s been really humbling that [fans] have come up me and would like me to come back — especially because I know how the first half of last year went, we didn’t make the playoffs, things like that. It gives you chills that people still want you to come back and be a part of the organization.”

Gallen posted a 4.83 ERA over 192 innings in 2025. On one hand, he’s made an average of 31 starts per season since 2022 and has an All-Star berth as a starter, but on the other hand suggests that a 4.83 ERA could really be holding back Gallen’s free agency market. His FIP in 2025 was 4.50, which means he doesn’t have the “he’s unlucky” tag next to him.

His strikeout rate and walk rate had been headed in the wrong direction before he pitched much better in the second-half of 2025.

What is Zac Gallen’s Market?

Now that the Arizona Diamondbacks seem to once again be a possible destination (I don’t think it was ever ruled out) for Zac Gallen, what does his market look like?

It’s expected that other big spenders in MLB (Orioles, Giants, Mets) will make a run at signing Zac Gallen, but since he’s likely the second-best available starting option behind Framber Valdez, he’s likely going to demand somewhere in the $20-25 million AAV range.

If other starters like Chris Bassitt, Lucas Giolito, and Zack Littell might be headed towards pretty lucrative deals, there’s no reason to believe Gallen’s deal will be any less than those starters.

According to Spotrac, Gallen’s market value projects him to earn a four-year deal worth up to $75 million.
