Play ball!; Baseball could be coming back to the Grand Valley

  • February 5, 2026

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) – Grand Junction City Council is considering a new agreement that could bring semi-professional baseball back to the valley.

If approved, the Pecos League would begin playing at Suplizio Field as early as this year.

After the Jackalopes announced they wouldn’t return in 2026, the city of Grand Junction began searching for a new way to keep baseball alive at Suplizio Field.

“We lost the Jackalopes, unfortunately, because a lot of people do enjoy going to a baseball game. I mean, obviously, Grand Junction is a home of JUCO. Like, we love baseball here. And I think that’s important to consider when we’re looking at this potential relationship with the Pecos League,” said Cody Kennedy, Mayor of Grand Junction.

Agreement details

If approved, the agreement would bring fewer games than previous seasons, but city leaders say the Pecos League is expected to bring more community focused events and increased use of the stadium.

“The Pecos League has said that they are not going to be here during JUCO. For several reasons, not just because they don’t want to detract from what’s happening with JUCO, but all the baseball fields throughout town are going to be occupied. Hotels are going to be occupied, right? The focus is really on JUCO,” said Kennedy.

City officials say they also reached out to other leagues, but the Pecos League was the only group to formally respond to the city’s request for proposals.

“We had reached out after the Pecos League had contacted us just out of fairness. Out of a matter of wanting to make sure that we had any other leagues that wanted to utilize Grand Junction, we reached out. We put that RFP out and really the Pecos League is the only ones we were engaging with,” said Kennedy.

Next steps

City Council is expected to make a decision Wednesday night (2/4).

If approved, staff will begin working with the Pecos League to finalize a schedule and release dates to the public.
