The New York Mets are reportedly in trade talks over two young players on the roster after signing Bo Bichette to play third base.

Bichette, naturally a shortstop, is nowhere near the defender of Fransico Lindor at the position, and his secondary position — second base — is being filled by the great glove of Marcus Seimien.

Instead, Bichette will be tasked with playing a position that he has never played — third base.

The Mets have two key third basemen on the roster with Brett Baty and Mark Vientos occupying the rotation. With both players in the mix already and Bichette entering the picture, according to Andrew Fillipponi of 937 The Fan, Baty and Vientos are the subject of trade talks.

The Pittsburgh Pirates are the team with whom the Mets are talking regarding the two infielders, per Fillipponi, who covers Pittsburgh sports.

“The Pirates have been engaged in trade talks with the NY Mets. And are pursuing Brett Baty or Mark Vientos. Both play 3B,” Fillipponi wrote on X.

“But have been up rooted from that position because of Mets offseason moves. Asking price is high. But something can still get done.”

What is Brett Baty and Mark Vientos’ history with the Mets?

Baty was the second-best prospect in the Mets farm system at one point and FanGraphs’ No. 19 overall player, with a 55 out of 80 future value rating.

He was pretty good in 2025 for the Mets, posting a 2.3 fWAR and hitting .254/.313/.435 with a 111 wRC+.

Vientos came up around the same time, ranked as the sixth prospect in the system and No. 105 overall with a 50 out of 80 future value, per FanGraphs. Since breaking through, he has put up a 2.9 fWAR 2024 season and a 0.4 fWAR 2025 season.

Both were a part of a prospect class that added youth to the Mets roster, led by the promotion of Francisco Alvarez.

Baty and Vientos have significant value due to their youth and untapped potential on the board. They are 26 years old and could help the Pirates with their infield and solve a bit of an infield roster crunch.
