FORT MYERS, Fla. — The Red Sox added two players to their major league roster Wednesday, signing free agent infielder Isiah Kiner-Falefa to a one-year, $6 million contract (pending a physical) and claiming catcher/infielder Mickey Gasper off waivers from the Nationals.
Kiner-Falefa, who turns 31 next month, hit .262 with a .631 OPS over 138 games for the Pirates and Blue Jays last season. He appeared in 15 postseason games for Toronto, with three of his nine starts coming in the World Series.
Kiner-Falefa has primarily been a shortstop and third baseman during an eight-year career. He has been a below-average hitter but performed well defensively.
Marcelo Mayer is expected to play either second base or third for the Red Sox. Kiner-Falefa joins Nate Eaton, Romy Gonzalez, David Hamilton, and Nick Sogard as candidates for either position.
Sources said the Red Sox will continue to seek upgrades to their infield.

Jarren Duran (Mexico), Ceddanne Rafaela (Netherlands), and Wilyer Abreu (Venezuela) also are committed to the tournament. The trio made up the primary outfield alignment, from left to right, for the Red Sox last season.
Kyle Keller, who spent the last four seasons pitching in Japan, will be in camp as a nonroster invitee. The righthander, who turns 33 in April, had a 5.83 ERA over 44 games for the Marlins, Angels, and Pirates from 2019-21. But Keller had a 2.42 ERA over 158 games for the Hanshin Tigers and Yomiuri Giants working as a setup man. He struck out 177 over 152⅓ innings with 62 walks.
