Museum president says Teasley exemplifies the stories they’re dedicated to preserving

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) – The Negro Leagues Baseball Museum is mourning another loss. Ron “Schoolboy” Teasley died Tuesday at 99, leaving behind a legacy that extends far beyond the baseball diamond.

Ron “Schoolboy” Teasley was the second-oldest living Negro Leagues player — a patriarch of the league who played in 1948, right after integration started. With his living voice now gone, preserving the stories of players like him becomes an increasingly urgent mission for the museum.

“Every time we lose one of these legendary athletes who called the Negro Leagues home, it takes a piece of us with them,” said Bob Kendrick, president of the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum, who memorialized Teasley on Facebook.

With over 3,000 players who called the Negro Leagues home between 1920 and 1948, Kendrick said only about 100 remain alive today.

Teasley played one year with the New York Cubans after being rejected by the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1957, the same year Jackie Robinson was signed. His story mirrors many in the Negro Leagues: a life that defied the narratives at the time.

“There were these misnomers that these athletes were illiterate. They were hobos. They were tramps, vagabonds,” Kendrick said. “Here’s Ron Teasley. He was a college-educated athlete, a stellar student-athlete who imparted so much to others.”

Teasley was a Navy veteran who attended Wayne State University, where he excelled in both baseball and basketball. After his playing days ended in 1951, he dedicated 34 years to the Detroit Board of Education as an educator, mentor and coach.

He was also a columnist and photographer for the Michigan Chronicle and covered the 1948 Goodwill Games in Russia.

His accolades include induction into the Wayne State Athletic Hall of Fame and the Michigan High School Coaches Association Hall of Fame.

Museum dedicated to stories of triumph

Teasley’s story — and thousands like it — stem from a horrible chapter of American history: segregation. But the focus at the museum is on the timeless lesson of the power to persevere and prevail.

“This story is not about the adversity, but rather what they did to overcome that adversity. And that’s the real story,” Kendrick said. “And it really does transcend race, it transcends age, it transcends gender.”

Kendrick emphasized that while America was trying to prevent these athletes from sharing in the joy of its national pastime, it was the American spirit that allowed them to persevere and prevail.

“What’s not to love about that kind of story?” he said.

Visitors to the museum say they leave with a powerful message.

“Hope, perseverance, being able to overcome adversity and live your truth,” said John Leuzzi, who traveled from Orlando to visit the museum.

The museum’s mission goes beyond preserving baseball history. According to Kendrick, it’s about teaching life lessons that stem from these stories.

“It’s our job as the primary caretaker of this history to not only tell their story, but also to make sure that we are teaching the life lessons that stem from this story,” Kendrick said.

Free Admission in February

This month, the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum is offering free admission thanks to support from the Kansas City Royals Foundation. This is the fifth year of the partnership, which has brought more than 50,000 visitors to the museum during February.

“This impactful community outreach initiative makes the museum more accessible for students, particularly those from underserved communities, while also encouraging more people to visit where they have an opportunity to learn about and be inspired by courageous athletes who overcame tremendous social adversity to play the game they loved,” Kendrick said.

Those who keep these stories alive hope visitors walk away inspired — to dream big and persevere against whatever obstacles they face.

About Ron Teasley

Ron “Schoolboy” Teasley was born in 1927 and died Tuesday, February 4, 2026, at age 99.

He was the first African American baseball captain for Northwestern High School in Detroit. After serving in the U.S. Navy from 1945-46, he attended Wayne State University, where he was an outstanding baseball and basketball player.

Teasley played for the New York Cubans in 1948 before joining the Carman Cardinals of the Mandak League in 1949 and 1950, where he was selected to the All-Star team.

He earned his Bachelor’s of Physical Education degree from Wayne State in 1955 and a Master’s of Administration in 1963.

As of 2025, Teasley had three children, seven grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Marie.

“Teasley leaves an indelible legacy of servitude that we should all strive to emulate!” Kendrick wrote on Facebook. “He was a great athlete but an even better man! He will be missed!”

Negro Leagues Baseball Museum

The Negro Leagues Baseball Museum is located at 1616 E. 18th St. in Kansas City’s historic 18th & Vine District.
