This offseason has been a very encouraging one for the Pittsburgh Pirates. They’ve gone out and added a few key veterans like Brandon Lowe and Ryan O’Hearn, and have a lot of optimism going forward.
Recently, they’ve even been linked to the top pitcher, Framber Valdez, for a free agent deal. Things are looking up for the Pirates, and a recent rumor is making things even more exciting.
According to Andrew Fillipponi of 937 The Fan, the Pirates are reportedly pursuing a pair of 26-year-old infielders from the New York Mets in Mark Vientos and Brett Baty.
Pirates get exciting trade rumor on Mets sluggers
“SOURCES: The Pirates have been engaged in trade talks with the NY Mets,” Fillipponi reports, “and are pursuing Brett Baty or Mark Vientos. Both play 3B. But have been uprooted from that position because of the Mets’ offseason moves. Asking price is high, but something can still get done.”
The Mets trading one of Baty or Vientos is within the realm of possibility thanks to their other roster moves this offseason.
The Pirates are exploring offensive upgrades still this offseason. After missing out on Eugenio Suarez, either Vientos or Baty would be an incredible get for the Pirates.
Both are 26 years old, but Baty, who had 3.1 bWAR in 2025 across 130 games with a .254 batting average and a .748 OPS, would be the better option. He’s under club control through 2029.

Vientos, on the other hand, while also 26 years old, is coming off a down 2025 season. He had -0.2 bWAR in 121 games with a .233 average and a .702 OPS. He’s also under club control through the 2029 season.
Baty has more value right now, so acquiring Vientos might be the Pirates’ best option. He had a 3.1 bWAR season in 2024 with a .266 average, .837 OPS, and 27 home runs.
Vientos is the better power-hitter, so if the Pirates are looking for such a bat for their lineup, Vientos might make the most sense in a trade with the Mets.
As of now, this is only a rumor, but it’s an exciting one nonetheless. Adding someone as young and as talented as Vientos or Baty would be awesome for the Pirates. This is an exciting rumor, as the Pirates might finally be ready to spend big this offseason.
