During the 2023 MLB Draft, the Chicago White Sox took a gamble and selected pitcher Grant Taylor in the second round. His stock had fallen a bit due to having Tommy John surgery.

After a few years in the minors, Taylor got his first taste of big-league action in June of last year. He made 36 appearances (two starts), putting together a 2-4 record with a 4.91 ERA across 36.2 innings of work.

The No. 10 prospect is a lock to make the Opening Day roster and should see increased usage. And with the addition of Seranthony Dominguez, this now opens up a new role for the hard-throwing righty.

The addition of Seranthony Dominguez frees up this exciting young arm for a bigger role

The front office is looking to convert Taylor into a full-time starting pitcher. However, that will not be this season.

Instead, according to MLB.com’s Scott Merkin, fans will see Taylor working in a role that allows him to pitch more innings, giving him more experience. He and the club have set a goal for him to throw 100 innings in 2026.

“With starting being a possibility in his future, we want to build more innings than he had last year knowing that might look a little different out of the bullpen role. I don’t think there’s a direct plan or hard guidelines on how we are going to use him,” said manager Will Venable. “We feel really good about where our bullpen is, and the ability to add Dominguez to free up Grant to help us get some more wins.”

Dominguez working as the club’s closer this upcoming season means Taylor can be the multiple-innings guy that gets the ball to the ninth inning. Putting more innings on the young arm will help him build his arm up as he continues to develop.
