The Boston Red Sox are making moves to acquire right-handed hitters. On Wednesday, the Red Sox signed Isiah Kiner-Falefa to a one-year, $6 million deal. On Thursday, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports that Boston also signed former Rockies and Astros infielder Brendan Rodgers to a minor league deal, which includes a non-roster invite to Red Sox’ spring camp.
Rodgers, 29, has 47 home runs and 96 doubles in seven MLB seasons. The Red Sox have reportedly been shopping for an infield option to provide an offensive presence, and Boston has now signed both Kiner-Falefa and Brendan Rodgers.

Brendan Rodgers is a Gold Glove Winner
Brendan Rodgers won the Gold Glove in 2022 with the Colorado Rockies, in what was arguably his best season as a pro. In 2022, Rodgers also hit .266 with 30 doubles, 13 home runs, and 63 RBI. His defense has since taken a big regression, and can now Rodgers’ glove can be considered a liability in the infield.
However, over 43 games with the Astros in 2025, Rodgers hit just .191 with six extra-base hits and an OPS below .600.
Rodgers will have a chance to prove himself in a few weeks in the Red Sox spring camp. He spent six seasons in Colorado, but struggled with injuries for extended portions of his career, which hampered the beginning of his career.

Is this the slugger the Red Sox are looking for? Fans will likely say no, but it is a good organizational piece that gives the team infield depth after losing Alex Bregman.

Brendan Rodgers MLB Journey
After a 2024 season that some MLB analysts would consider successful (13 home runs, 29 doubles, .267 average), Brendan Rodgers ended up being non-tendered, which essentially means released, because the Rockies didn’t end up picking him up after dumping his contract.
MLBTradeRumors.com was first on this news, and explained Rodgers transition out of Colorado:
“The Rockies non-tendered Rodgers after the ’24 season. He signed a minor league deal with the Astros and made the Opening Day roster. Rodgers stuck on the roster all year but only hit .191/.266/.278 with two home runs over 43 games. Injuries kept him from appearing in an MLB game after the middle of June. He went down with an oblique strain, then suffered a concussion in an on-field collision during a minor league rehab game. Rodgers tried to ramp back up in August but dealt with back discomfort that shut him down for the year.”
While it’s interesting what the Red Sox are doing before spring training, these additions of Isiah Kiner-Falefa and Brendan Rodgers aren’t needle movers, and certainly not going to convince Red Sox fans that the front office has done enough to replace Alex Bregman.
