José Urquidy, Pittsburgh Pirates

The Pirates are in agreement with free agent right-handed pitcher José Urquidy, a source confirmed to Pittsburgh Baseball Now. The deal, which is for one-year and $1.5 million, is pending a physical.

Urquidy, 30, pitched five seaons with the Houston Astros from 2019-23 and went 27-16 with a 3.98 ERA across 79 appearances/70 starts. In 405 innings, he allowed 366 hits, walked 97 and struck out 326.

Tommy John surgery cost Urquidy the 2024 season, but he returned to the mound for the Detroit Tigers last year and made a pair of relief appearances. The right-hander also made seven appearances/four starts with Triple-A Toledo and went 1-0 with a 3.24 ERA across 16.2 innings.

Urquidy adds starting pitching depth and has the ability to be optioned if the fails to make the club’s Opening Day roster. It marks the second straight day the Pirates have added rotation depth after signing Mike Clevinger to a minor-league deal with an invite to spring training.

Urquidy reunites with new Pirates pitching coach Bill Murphy, who joined manager Don Kelly’s staff from Houston.
