Boston Red Sox outfielder Wilyer Abreu
The 2026 MLB season is coming up quickly with spring training beginning later this month and both the New York Mets and Boston Red Sox are hoping to be legitimate World Series threats.
Heading into the season, the two teams are coming off of polar opposite offseason periods.
On one hand, the Mets were one of the most aggressive teams in the league. They were able to add star pitcher Freddy Peralta, star infielder Bo Bichette, and also made other additions that will help them compete for a championship run. As for the Red Sox, they lost star third baseman Alex Bregman and have struggled to replace him.
Boston was able to add a big starting pitcher in Ranger Suarez, but the Red Sox still haven’t been able to address the glaring void in their infield.
With that being said, the two teams have been suggested as potential trade partners before spring training.
New York Mets & Boston Red Sox Could Be Perfect Trade Partners
ESPN’s David Schoenfield has revealed one potential option that could make sense for both New York and Boston. He thinks that the two clubs could swap some talent.
In his suggested trade idea, the Red Sox would send outfielder Wilyer Abreu to the Mets in exchange for third baseman Brett Baty.
“Still, this trade makes a lot of sense. FanGraphs ranks the Red Sox 28th in projected WAR at third base and 18th at second base,” Schoenfield wrote. “The Mets, meanwhile, with Benge currently penciled in as the primary left fielder, rank 24th at the position. (Juan Soto would presumably move there with Abreu in right field.)”
Both teams would cross needs off of their list with this trade. It isn’t the flashiest move for either club, but a deal could make sense.
What Would Each Team Be Getting in This Trade Scenario?
For the Mets, Abreu would be an outfield upgrade that they could definitely use. The 26-year-old outfielder is coming off of a 2025 season with the Red Sox that saw him play in 115 games. He hit 22 home runs to go along with 69 RBI, while also producing a slash line of .247/.317/.469.
Abreu would be a potential long-term pickup for New York as well. He is still young with plenty of development and good baseball left ahead of him.
As for Boston, the Red Sox would be receiving a replacement for Bregman. Baty hasn’t been able to live up to his full potential, but a change of scenery could help him accomplish that goal.
During the 2025 MLB season with New York, Baty played in 130 games. He hit 18 home runs, drove in 50 RBI, stole eight bases, and slashed .254/.313/.435.
On the outside looking in, this trade would be fairly even and would help both teams. It’s just an idea at this point in time, but it’s one that makes a lot of sense.
