Calvary Day School celebrated National Signing Day on Friday as four Cavaliers officially committed to continue their academic and athletic careers at the collegiate level.
Leading the group was football standout Jay Varner, who signed with Murray State University after helping guide the Cavaliers to their first state championship appearance since 2013 this past season.
Soccer standout Carter Batts also made things official, signing with Trinity College of Jacksonville, where he will continue both his education and soccer career.
Calvary Day’s baseball program was well represented as well, with two players heading to the next level. Quinn Johnson signed with the University of North Georgia, while Carter Hampton committed to Massachusetts Maritime Academy, where he plans to pursue his goal of becoming a harbor pilot in addition to playing baseball.
“I talked to a few schools early on, but ultimately God spoke to me, and I felt like the best decision was to go to this school and pursue my baseball career,” Hampton said.
Johnson said Friday’s moment was the result of years of support and dedication.
“It feels really good to see all the hard work pay off,” Johnson said. “My parents spent so much time driving me to practices and games, and I’m glad I can repay them by earning a scholarship to play college baseball.”
For Varner, the decision came down to trust in the coaching staff.
“You can tell when a coaching staff has a real plan for a program,” Varner said. “Coach Backing and Coach Miles believed in me and picked me up. They called me, and right away, it felt like home.”
Batts reflected on the journey that led to his signing day moment.
“I remember being a freshman and sophomore watching older guys commit to great programs, wondering if that would ever be my reality,” Batts said. “To finally be here today, after all the work that’s been put in, is such a blessing. It’s all for the glory of God.”
