The Atlanta Braves thought they had their shortstop for next season when they signed Ha-Seong Kim, but he suffered an offseason injury that will force him to miss significant time next season.
Kim is signed to a one-year deal, so he was not a long-term plan at shortstop for the Braves. They could look to swing a trade for a long-term solution at shortstop before spring training. ESPN’s David Schoenfield suggests the Braves swing this trade for CJ Abrams of the Washington Nationals:
Nationals receive: LHP Cam Caminiti, RHPÂ Didier Fuentes, IFÂ Nacho Alvarez Jr.Braves receive: SS CJ Abrams
Abrams is a Georgia native and would be a great fit on the Braves. He is not the best defensive shortstop, but he has the potential to become a superstar in the league. He was the No. 8 prospect in baseball in 2021 and was an All-Star in 2024. The Nationals may not want to trade him to a division rival, but it seems like they are open to starting fresh.
“Abrams has three seasons of team control, which arguably makes him expendable for the starting-from-scratch-again Nationals,” wrote Schoenfield. “They’re not going anywhere this season and they’re not going anywhere next season. If you’re optimistic that the Nationals might be good by 2028, that’s one year left of Abrams, assuming they haven’t signed him to an extension. The longer they keep him, the lower his trade value gets. In this deal, they get two top-100 pitching prospects in Caminiti (No. 53) and Fuentes (No. 88) to help an organization that under the previous regime struggled to develop pitching.”
Abrams hit 19 home runs last season and had a year similar to his All-Star season in 2024. He had a .748 OPS and 31 stolen bases. He could thrive in a Braves lineup that would take pressure off of him.
