The Los Angeles Dodgers made a shocking roster move Friday, claiming Ben Rortvedt off waivers from the Cincinnati Reds and designating Anthony Banda for assignment to make room on the roster.

Banda had been part of the last two World Series-winning squads, and made 119 appearances for the Dodgers over the last two seasons, keeping a 3.14 ERA. The Dodgers have plenty of left-handed relievers, though, and they found Banda to be the odd man out.

L.A. still has high-leverage guys in the bullpen such as Tanner Scott and Jack Dreyer, and Banda could always return on the off chance he clears waivers.

What Does Ben Rortvedt’s Return Mean for the Dodgers?

Rortvedt had been placed on waivers by the Dodgers at the end of the postseason, and he promptly joined the Reds. He commented on his time with the Dodgers after the Reds picked him up.

“It was tough when I came in but I really appreciate the support,” Rortvedt said after the Reds claimed him. “It’s been really cool to come in and try to do my job but feel support from the fans and be able to be myself.”

Rortvedt is now the third catcher on the 40-man roster, introducing an interesting situation behind the dish ahead of the season. Will Smith will undoubtedly be the starter for L.A. in 2026, but the Dodgers wouldn’t want three catchers on the roster, leaving Rushing and Rortvedt to battle it out in spring.
