After falling short in the World Series this past season, veteran right-hander Max Scherzer made it very clear that he wanted to keep his MLB career alive. Scherzer spent the 2025 season with the Toronto Blue Jays, helping them reach the Fall Classic for the first time in over 30 years, and despite his age (41), there is no stopping him.

The veteran had a shaky regular season for Toronto after getting a late start to the year due to an injury. Scherzer made 17 starts for the Blue Jays during the season, posting an ERA of 5.19 and putting up a WHIP of 1.29.

It was a tough few months for Scherzer on the mound, and some wondered if he could make any real impact for this team in the postseason. But the veteran more than stepped up, taking on a crucial spot in the starting rotation for this club.

In the playoffs, Scherzer pitched in 14.1 innings, putting up an ERA of 3.77. The veteran was even given the ball to start the pivotal Game 7 of the World Series, and when he left the game, Toronto held a multi-run lead.

All in all, Scherzer showed that he could still make a difference to a winning team, and this is likely to impact where he plays next. A return to Toronto remains available for him, and he has said he would love to come back, but it does take two to tango.

But it seems that Scherzer is looking for the right fit to keep his career alive, likely wanting to land with a contender. The veteran right-hander spoke with MLB insider Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic recently, giving more insight into his free agency plans.

“In a telephone conversation Thursday, free-agent right-hander Max Scherzer said he is healthy and ready to sign at any moment if certain teams call. But if the right opportunity is not available, Scherzer also is content to wait until after Opening Day for an opening to emerge with one of his preferred clubs,” Rosenthal wrote.

San Francisco Giants Sign RHP Max Scherzer

One team that could be of interest to Scherzer before the new year starts up is the San Francisco Giants. San Francisco has beefed up the starting rotation this offseason, bringing in Adrian Houser and Tyler Mahle to give itself more depth.

Putting them behind Logan Webb, Robbie Ray, and Landen Roupp, this team does have multiple quality arms. But teams can never have enough pitching help, and they could benefit from adding one more piece.

This is where someone like Scherzer could come into the plans, and he could be a mentor for this pitching staff, much like he did with the Blue Jays. San Francisco signed veteran Justin Verlander a year ago, and that move seemed to work out well for them, so it could be Scherzer’s time to head to the Bay Area.

Scherzer isn’t going to be asked to anchor the pitching staff, but instead give them reliable outings, which he has proved he can still do. The veteran also has a strong connection with new Giants manager Tony Vitello, which could play into where he signs.

All in all, San Francisco could be the place for the veteran to go if he doesn’t return to Toronto. The Giants have plans to get back to the playoffs, which would give Scherzer another chance to claim a second World Series title before he calls it a career.
