With all of the talk that the Philadelphia Phillies could move on from Nick Castellanos, and the Pittsburgh Pirates’ need for a right-handed bat, there seems to be a potential deal to be made if both sides want to go down that route.

A trade pitch between the Pirates and Phillies was recently proposed by Christopher Kline of FanSided, and it’s a good one for both sides.

From Pittsburgh’s perspective, the idea behind the move is simply getting more offensive help after what it showed last year. The Pirates have spent the past few seasons putting together elite young pitching and have done a nice job this winter by adding offensive help. However, to say the Pirates don’t need more would be unfair.

Castellanos, despite his flaws, still offers power and postseason experience.

“He butted heads with Rob Thomson throughout last season, demoted time and time again in the face of a steep offensive decline. The 33-year-old hit .250 with a .694 OPS, and still managed 17 home runs and 72 RBI. That bat is still functional, but it’s no longer enough to support catastrophically bad defense in right field.

“Casty was essentially the worst defensive outfielder in MLB last season. He’s due $20 million next season, the final year of his contract. That’s probably too much for any team, but if the Phillies eat a chunk of that salary, Dave Dombrowski can probably coax a prospect out of a bat-needy front office,” he wrote

While the struggles are important to bring up, Castellanos also isn’t too far removed from his All-Star days. Perhaps him going to a new team could unlock that again.

“Only two years removed from his last All-Star appearance, the mystique has not entirely worn off on Castellanos,” Kline wrote. “He has an impressive track record of postseason heroics and when he makes solid contact, the baseball goes far.”

The bigger thing to me here is how much money the Phillies are willing to send. Castellanos is set to play on a $20 million deal next season. If the Pirates get the Phillies to pay about $10-$12 million of that, I think it’s worth a chance.
