The Pittsburgh Pirates are looking to escape from the cellar of the National League Central division, and they have made a slew of moves over the offseason in an effort to help them accomplish that goal. And according to the latest rumors, it sounds like they may not be done, either, as they are looking to swing a trade with the Houston Astros for All-Star third baseman Isaac Paredes.

For weeks now, the Astros have been looking to move off one of their infielders in order to declutter their roster. Paredes has emerged as the most likely trade candidate, and while the Boston Red Sox remain his most likely landing spot, a new report indicates that Pittsburgh has also been lurking as a potential suitor in these trade talks as well.

“Boston remains one of at least five teams engaged with the Astros about Paredes, according to multiple league sources. Another is the Pittsburgh Pirates, who need an upgrade at third base and tried unsuccessfully to sign free-agent Eugenio Suárez before his agreement with the Cincinnati Reds,” Chandler Rome and Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reported.

Paredes had a strong year in 2025 with Houston, hitting .254 with 20 home runs and 53 RBIs. The Pirates could use some help at third base, and with the Astros looking to move him, that could provide the two sides with a starting point in trade talks. It remains to be seen whether or not Pittsburgh is willing to give up what it takes to land him, but this is a situation worth keeping tabs on.
