Toronto Blue Jays could be a fit for Danny Coulombe

The 2026 MLB season is about to begin with spring training later this month and the Toronto Blue Jays are ready to begin their pursuit of finishing what they started last season.

Of course, the Blue Jays came up short in the World Series last season against the Los Angeles Dodgers. After pushing the Dodgers to a winner-take-all Game 7, they narrowly missed winning it all. They’re hoping to make another run this season.

So far this offseason, Toronto has had a rollercoaster in free agency. Both Dylan Cease and Kazuma Okamoto were big-time signings, while the Blue Jays missed out on their main target in free agency. They attempted to sign superstar outfielder Kyle Tucker, but he ended up choosing to sign with Los Angeles.

That being said, there are still some areas Toronto could look to improve. One of those areas comes in the bullpen.

Keeping that in mind, the Blue Jays have been connected to a sleeper option late in free agency.

Toronto Blue Jays Linked to 36-Year-Old Free Agent Relief Pitcher

Jays Journal analyst Edward Eng has suggested that Toronto could be a potential fit for free agent reliever Danny Coulombe.

“With the Blue Jays lack of depth in left-handed pitchers in their bullpen behind Brendon Little, Mason Fluharty and swingman Eric Lauer, Coulombe could provide that reliable veteran presence to help dominate left-handed hitters,” Eng wrote.

“After all, Coulombe has held lefties to just a .233 average and .596 OPS for his entire MLB career. As a result, it should be time for Toronto to give the 36-year-old reliever a call.”

Coulombe may not be a household name, but he could be the piece that’s missing in the Blue Jays’ bullpen. He would also bring valuable experience for a team that’s all-in on competing for a championship.

As mentioned by Eng, Coulombe appeared in 55 games between the Minnesota Twins and Texas Rangers last season. He compiled a 2-1 record to go along with a 2.30 ERA, a 1.16 WHIP, a 2.4 K/BB ratio, two saves, nine holds, and no blown saves.

No Stone Should Be Unturned for the Blue Jays

After last season, Toronto has a clear opening in its championship window. At this point in time, no stone should be left unturned to pursue a World Series win.

Coulombe is the kind of bullpen piece that can come in clutch throughout the year. With a clear need for the Blue Jays, they should take a flier on a player like the 36-year-old veteran.

Whether or not Toronto is going to make a move remains to be seen. There are other bullpen options available as well for the Blue Jays to consider.

Expect to continue hearing rumors about the team as the offseason wraps up. Coulombe could be a legitimate target if Toronto chooses to make another move.
