This offseason, the Miami Marlins have been dismantling their starting rotation. They’ve made two major trades to deplete the rotation, though Sandy Alcantara wasn’t one of them.

They traded Edward Cabrera to the Chicago Cubs and Ryan Weathers to the New York Yankees. After those two moves, the need for more pitching depth was very clear.

With such a clear need, the Marlins are adding a veteran right-handed pitcher. According to Jon Heyman of The New York Post, the Marlins are in agreement on a $4 million deal with former San Diego Padres and Minnesota Twins righty Chris Paddack.

Marlins to sign Chris Paddack to $4M deal

“Chris Paddack to Marlins,” Heyman reported. “Paddack Marlins deal: $4M plus $500K incentives.”

The Marlins are adding a Paddack to their new-look starting rotation. Alcantara leads the group, while Eury Perez, Max Meyer, Braxton Garrett, and now Paddack round out the rotation.

Pete Fairbanks is the new closer, and with starters Dax Fulton, Adam Mazur, Ryan Gusto, and Bradley Blalock in the minors, the Marlins’ starting rotation options for the 2026 season are coming into focus.

Paddack is aa30-year-old veteran right-hander who’s been in the Major Leagues since the 2019 season. He’s spent three seasons with the Padres, 3.5 with the Twins, and the last half of 2025 with the Detroit Tigers.

This past season for the Twins, Paddack posted a 4.95 ERA in 21 starts. After joining the Tigers, he posted a 6.32 ERA with -0.6 bWAR.

Across his Major League career, Paddack has made 118 appearances, 110 of which have been starts. His 4.64 ERA and 32-36 record with 3.4 career bWAR isn’t the best.

But, as a depth pitcher who can eat innings and provide some intriguing upside, Paddack isn’t the worst free agent signing for the Marlins. If he shows promise this season, he could be a mid-season trade candidate.

But, for now, the Marlins are adding Paddack to their rotation for the 2026 season on a $4 million deal that has an extra $500,000 in incentives tied into his new contract. He is returning to the organization after more than a decade since initially being selected in the 8th round of the 2015 MLB Draft.
