RAYS REPORT THIS WEEK | Spring training is getting closer for the Tampa Bay Rays, as pitchers and catchers will report to Port Charlotte on Wednesday, with a workout set for Thursday. The first full squad workout will be next Tuesday, Feb. 17. The Rays will play their first spring training game on Feb. 21 against the Atlanta Braves in Port Charlotte.
SHORELINE SAFETY MEETING | The city of St. Petersburg launched a Seawall Master Plan to assess, preserve, and improve the city-owned seawall system in response to increasing coastal flooding, erosion and sea level rise. City officials are seeking input from residents, property owners, and stakeholders to ensure it reflects local concerns, values, and priorities. Residents will have the opportunity to attend a virtual public meeting, complete the online community survey, and explore the interactive story map to see project details and progress. ART & POETRY CONTEST | The city of Tampa is accepting submissions for its 3Rs Rs Art & Poetry Contest. All Tampa elementary through high school students are encouraged to share their message of waste reduction and environmental stewardship for the chance to win prizes. GRANT PROGRAM | AARP Florida invites local eligible nonprofit organizations and governments to apply for the 2026 AARP Community Challenge grant program, now through March 4, at 5 p.m. AARP Community Challenge grants fund quick-action projects that help communities become more livable by improving public places, transportation, housing, digital connections, and more. Grants can range from several hundred dollars for small, short-term activities to tens of thousands for larger projects. A medical test will soon be required for all Florida high school student-athletes, thanks to new state legislation called the “Second Chance Act.”
An electrocardiogram, also known as an ECG or EKG, is a non-invasive test that records the heart’s electrical activity.Â
The test aims to prevent kids from going into cardiac arrest.Â
