DALLAS — Is this the greatest ballpark giveaway in the history of ballpark giveaways? Did Nolan Ryan throw a baseball hard?
The Rangers on Tuesday — the first day for pitchers and catchers at spring training, by the way — announced a few giveaway items for the upcoming season, including the promo for May 29 against the Royals: A Nolan Ryan jersey, bloodstains and all.
You’re going to need THIS Nolan Ryan bloody lip jersey on May 29.

It’s not real blood, at least we don’t think it is, but matches the real thing stain for stain. The real thing being, of course, Ryan’s famous bloodied lip against the Royals in 1990. Bo Jackson drilled a grounder up the middle, and Ryan took it off the face. Blood poured out of his lip, all over his fresh white jersey. Ryan kept pitching anyway.
It was an image seared in Ryan’s legacy with the Rangers, up there with his no-hitters and the time he put Robin Ventura in a headlock.

Now, all fans who attend the May 29 game against the Royals at Globe Life Field will receive a replica of the bloodied jersey. This one isn’t limited to the first 10,000 or 5,000 fans like most giveaways.
The Rangers, who open the season on the road at Philadelphia on March 26, have had their fair share of solid giveaways over the years, but this one might be the best. In fact, it’s probably up there with that Outkast bobblehead the Braves gave away a couple of seasons ago. But with all due respect to Atlanta, Outkast never threw seven no-hitters.
