HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — It doesn’t take long to understand that Tyler Cox sees baseball through a different lens.

“It’s a game with a lot of athletic intuition,” Cox told ABC13. “It’s not a very fast game, but it’s fast in the moment.”

His high-level assessment comes after he attended 14 different schools before finding his home at the University of Houston.

“I tried out a school for 6th grade. It didn’t work,” Cox said. “Did an extra year of 8th grade at another school.”

The list goes on. Cox’s baseball journey continues, as well.

Before UH, the shortstop went to Dartmouth, where he dove into the deep end of the academic pool in the Ivy League.

“At Dartmouth, I started in quantitative social science,” he said. “I was kind of more of a numbers guy.”

“How about this number? 25. I’m 25 years old. Ready to go for one last time here in Houston,” he said with a smile.

Cox wouldn’t trade a moment on the long road that led him to his final college baseball season.

“It’s a game that’s brought me so much in terms of community. Just the camaraderie and being with the guys,” Cox said.

Where does his sense of adventure come from? It started with his dad, actor Richard Cox, who was nominated for a Tony Award and has more than 100 acting credits.

“He loves life so much,” Tyler said. “He’s interested in so many things.”

Even in his late seventies, Cox’s dad still wants to play catch with his son.

Tyler laughs as he says, “Alright dad, I might need a day now. I’m not as spry as I was six years ago.”

What does Cox want from his final season? The team’s goal is a spot in the NCAA Tournament. Cox will savor the challenge and the lessons he learns along the way.

“It’s just been a wonderful journey for me to kind of discover who I am as a ball player. Who I am as a young man,” Cox said.
