The Chicago Cubs have been busy this off-season adding arms to supplement the ones already present in their starting rotation and bullpen. Indeed, it will be interesting to see how their pitching staff shapes out during Spring Training. However, one arm they chose not to bring back was Aaron Civale.

Late in year last season, the Cubs picked Civale up off of waivers from the Chicago White Sox. He appeared in five games for them in regular season and went 1-0 with a 2.08 ERA.

In the post season, Civale appeared in one game and threw 4.1 innings of scoreless relief against the Milwaukee Brewers in Game One of the NLDS.

Now he is heading back to the American League.

According to MLB insider Jeff Passan of ESPN, Civale is signing a one-year $6 million contract with the Athletics. He can earn an extra $1.5 million in incentives:

Right-hander Aaron Civale and the A’s are in agreement on a one-year, $6 million contract, sources tell ESPN. Civale, 30, adds a veteran arm to an A’s team with hopes of competing for a postseason spot this year and can make an additional $1.5 million in incentives.

Unlike in Chicago, Civale will likely be viewed as a contender for the A’s starting rotation. After all, it was Milwaukee’s desire to move him to the bullpen in the first place that prompted him to request a trade away from the Brewers in the first place.

They, of course, did, and sent him to the White Sox for Andrew Vaughn. After a disappointing stint with the South Side Sox, during which time he was 2-7 with a 5.39 ERA, he was waived. That is how he became available for the Cubs down the stretch.

For his career, Civale is 43-44 with a 4.14 ERA.
