News broke on Wednesday that the Diamondbacks All-Star had injured the bone the day before, with surgery necessary to repair it. Not only does this keep him off the roster for the World Baseball Classic, but it could also have Opening Day implications depending on his timeline for return.
“Yesterday, [Carroll] walked off field three saying that something was wrong with his hand,” Lovullo said on MLB Network on Wednesday. “He basically told me, as he walked by, ‘I think I just broke my hand.’ I thought he was kidding. Clearly, there was something wrong. He goes and gets the X-ray… That’s just part of being a baseball player.”

Carroll’s injury isn’t unique, with two other players already undergoing the procedure to repair their hamate bones before spring training. It could, however, shift the lineup depending on where the All-Star stands before the start of the regular season.
The Diamondbacks have other position players who could slide into right field duties, and with Carroll’s scheduled participation in the WBC, there were already plans to adjust the outfield.
Now, it seems it’s not just about getting reps for these players but also potentially preparing them for a possible Opening Day lineup spot.

“I’ve been calling in a couple of guys here and there, telling them these are the things that might be happening,” said Lovullo. “… Everybody’s on board. Anybody I’ve come into contact with and talked to about this, they know this is a team moment. They gotta go out there and rally around one another and help out while [Carroll] is banged up.”
