The Pittsburgh Pirates reportedly have interest in Mark Vientos of the New York Mets, but it takes two sides to make a trade. According to Will Sammon, while the Pirates might have interest, he questioned whether they’d give up the necessary prospects to get something done.

“As far as the Pirates are concerned, I have my doubts as to whether they will meet the Mets’ asking price for that because the Mets view those guys still pretty highly,” Sammon said, per SNY. “If they were to look at making a deal for someone like Brett Baty, it may involve pitching. It may have to first be something where they deal someone from their rotation, open up a spot, get someone else, do some maneuvering.”

Despite that, Pittsburgh’s lineup has improved, but the lack of consistent options has remained one of the biggest questions still heading into spring. When I look at where the Pirates have struggled offensively, run production, slugging, and more, it’s easy to see why a trade for Vientos makes sense..

Ryan Shea recently proposed one, but it feels like a deal that wouldn’t make much sense.

Pirates Acquire: Vientos

Mets Acquire: Bubba Chandler, Jhostynxon Garcia

“The Pirates would pursue this trade to acquire Mark Vientos, a middle-of-the-order bat who could provide an immediate offensive boost,” Shea wrote. “Pittsburgh has struggled to generate consistent power and run production, and Vientos’ ability to hit for extra bases and drive in RBIs addresses that need.

“By trading Bubba Chandler and Jhostynxon García, the Pirates give up future pitching and hitting upside for a proven bat who can contribute right away, helping accelerate their rebuild and make their lineup more competitive in the near term.”

From a surface-level roster fit, it makes sense.

Vientos would add a young bat to this lineup and has shown at points throughout his career that he can swing it, despite some struggles. He’d instantly become one of Pittsburgh’s top hitters and could fit in well with this young core.

However, when looking at some of his struggles and the idea of trading Chandler just makes no sense to me.

Chandler has a chance to be really good and I’d want a lot better of a player than Vientos if the Pirates were to go that route.
